Da Liu Ren reigns as the most powerful form of divination from traditional China, the highest of the “Three Styles” of divination, which include Qi Men Dun Jia and Tai Yi. While Qi Men Dun Jia stood as the most popular form of divination to the Tang Dynasty, Da Liu Ren likely surpassed Qi Men Dun Jia in popularity during the Song Dynasty and was given the highest regard since that time. Our course represents the fruit of an old master’s knowledge of Da Liu Ren. The master’s approach is to base his writings soundly on the classic works from China’s extensive literature about Da Liu Ren, yet make these works accessible to modern readers through interpretation and practical examples chosen from daily life. This course follows the master’s educational philosophy, as a translation of his work in simple English, with illustrations and examples taken from daily life (please see our snapshot of Sir Richard Branson as an example). The result is a course about Da Liu Ren which is firmly based in classical Chinese literature, and at the same time accessible and practical for today’s students in any areas of the world. The goal of our course is to produce students who are able to accurately practice Da Liu Ren by themselves, in any style of divination they wish to pursue. Da Liu Ren Chart |

The charts used in Da Liu Ren follow the Cycle of Sixty (hexasegimal cycle), or the sixty days which make up the cycle used in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. There are two types of charts for each day, one for daytime divination, a second for evening divination. Each chart contains a fixed Earth Pan and a rotating Heaven Pan, as well as twelve aristocrats. Of special importance in Da Liu Ren divination are the Four Classes (si ke) and the Three Transmissions (San zhuan). All of these symbols are written in standard format in the accompanying series of Da Liu Ren situations offered on this website (in English and Chinese). The key to Da Liu Ren divination lies in interpretation, and that is where the complexity lies. The situations and special circumstances in Da Liu Ren are far more numerous than those in Qi Men Dun Jia, and so require a higher level of mastery. Each particular day or evening Da Liu Ren chart may contain as many as four separate types of situations which require interpretation. While there are no strict prerequisites for studying Da Liu Ren, we recommend that students have at least a foundation in Four Pillars divination. Mastery of Qi Men Dun Jia would prove helpful, as well as mastery of Tai Yi, but these are not required. Some knowledge of Chinese would prove helpful, and students should expect to learn some one hundred Chinese characters in order to master Da Liu Ren. Students with some knowledge of the Chinese characters used in Chinese metaphysics will have an advantage in studying Da Liu Ren. |
