Chinese Emperors for many centuries into the past have included three types of divination within the Imperial Palaces, known as the “Three Styles.” These three styles of divination are Qi Men Dun Jia, Da Liu Ren, and Tai Yi. Imperial officials collected books about these three styles of divination and practiced them to help guide imperial policy. Today, the Three Styles are recognized as the most advanced forms of divination in the Chinese tradition. For students of Feng Shui and Chinese metaphysics, mastery of the Three Styles is the equivalent of reaching the top of the sacred mountain. One can travel no higher than to learn Tai Yi, Qi Men Dun Jia and Da Liu Ren. Tai Yi was primarily used to determine whether or not to go to war or into battle. Three different “counts” were taken of the planned battle or invasion, the Host Count, the Guest Count and the Fixed Count. If the counts and the arrangement on the Tai Yi Cosmic Board suited warfare, the emperor would command his forces into battle. If the counts and symbol arrangements worked against battle, then the emperor would likely decide not to go to war (see the related story about Kublai Khan). |

As with Qi Men Dun Jia, additional divination methods were derived from Tai Yi to suit civilian purposes, the most popular called the “Tai Yi Fate Method.” Under this method, the analyst figures out the location of twelve palaces (akin to astrological houses) which rule human lives to analyze the fortunes of individuals (please see our related examples of Tai Yi Birth Charts for Marilyn Monroe and Madonna). |
|
Tai Yi includes an additional feature for analysis of the sixty – four hexagrams of the I Ching (Yi Jing or I Ging). Each individual is born with a Birth Hexagram and a Career Hexagram, and the Tai Yi analyst may examine these hexagrams to tell the fortunes and futures of individuals. Tai Yi Hexagram analysis provides for enhanced and more detailed life readings. The Tai Yi Series by Feng Shui Phoenix includes Part I, which provides an introduction and explanation of the concepts used in Tai Yi, and examples of all the different Use Spirits and symbols found on the Tai Yi Cosmic Board. The various methods of Tai Yi divination are covered, including the Tai Yi Cosmic Board, the Tai Yi Fate Method and Tai Yi Hexagram analysis. Parts II and III provide two – page descriptions of the Tai Yi Cosmic Board configurations for Yin Dun and Yang Dun (there are 72 configurations for Yin and Yang Dun each in Tai Yi) in English and Chinese. The descriptions include the locations of the Tai Yi Fate Method palaces so that members do not have to worry about making these calculations. |
